诗涅诗涅直播间不仅是一个对创作、交流和文化认知有所提 Written in the form of a letter, this document was signed by 27 women from across Canada. They are writing on behalf of “women’s health” to express our concern with government proposals that would see publicly funded services for sexual and reproductive rights erode or disappear.
The list of concerns is long but we will limit ourselves today by focusing on one proposal in particular, the new abortion-restricting bill being developed under the auspices of a secret committee at federal level (and similar provincial proposals). This letter expresses our views on the bill and the way it was drafted.
We are deeply concerned about this bill which is designed to erode or eliminate publicly funded abortion in Canada, as well as other sexual and reproductive health services. The language of Bill C-2304 would effectively prohibit access to safe, legal abortions for the vast majority of women in Canada by removing all public financing from the procedure at a time when many low income Canadians lack reliable or adequate insurance coverage.
As you know, this bill was drafted behind closed doors using anonymous submissions made by an unknown group who apparently did not consult with any experts or advocacy organizations. There are currently no known supporters for Bill C-2304 in Canada’s House of Commons and the only way to bring it into law is through a secret committee that has been allowed to operate outside Parliamentary procedures (in fact, without even acknowledging its existence).
This letter seeks not only to voice our opposition to this bill but also to draw attention to some specific issues related to how the legislation was drafted. We urge you and your colleagues in Ottawa to take steps that will restore public confidence in this process including:
1) The Bill’s language, which would eliminate all funding for abortion from provincial health plans but still allow provinces to provide it privately; is so unclear as to be virtually impossible to implement. As we understand it, the legislation could actually lead to more costly and less accessible services.
2) The fact that this bill was written without public consultation raises serious questions about its legitimacy. It has also raised concerns among Canadian women’s health organizations who are committed to providing sexual and reproductive rights education, counseling and services, as well as research on the effectiveness of these programs.
3) The secrecy surrounding this bill is alarming because it violates parliamentary procedure and undermines public trust in our democratic institutions. It also makes it difficult for Canadians to understand how this legislation might affect them or their access to vital services such as family planning, contraception, prenatal care and childbirth support.
4) The potential impact of this bill on vulnerable populations should not be ignored. For example, low-income women who rely heavily upon government funding for essential reproductive healthcare may find themselves without adequate options once public financing is removed from abortion services. This could lead to increased rates of unsafe procedures or unintended pregnaninas, further exacerbating socioeconomic disparities between those who can afford private care and those who cannot.
5) We call on the Canadian government to halt all efforts related to this bill until it has been thoroughly reviewed through a transparent and consultative process that involves representatives from various sectors, including women's health advocacy groups, medical professionals, legal experts and affected communities. This will ensure not only that any legislation passed by Parliament truly reflects the needs and interests of Canadian citizens but also helps rebuild trust in our democratic institutions.
Sincerely,
Canadian Women's Health Network (CWHN)
P.S. We are committed to working with all parties interested in promoting women's health rights to address the concerns raised here and ensure that Canadian policy supports accessibility, affordability and equity for reproductive care services nationwide.
