Abstract: Despite growing awareness regarding the significant role that peers play in adolescent risk-taking behavior, including substance use and abuse, there remains a paucity of experimental research investigating how peer influence specifically affects this domain. This review synthesizes findings from over 50 experiments conducted between 1974 and 2016 examining the role social context plays in adolescent risk-taking behavior using laboratory-based, longitudinal, or ecologically valid experimental designs. We found consistent evidence that peer influence increases rates of risk-taking among adolescents. Furthermore, our synthesis highlights a need for more research on how various types and sources of social context affect specific risky behaviors across different stages of adolescent development.
