Abstract

Background. For many adolescents growing up in divorced families, schooling represents a refuge where they can feel some control and security. This study is based on the assumption that parental conflict during the divorce proceedings negatively affects children's performance at school, even when divorces are otherwise amicable.

Objectives. To investigate whether adolescent achievement in social and academic areas differs between offspring of divorced and non-divorced parents, to determine whether parental conflict during the divorce proceedings influences adolescent social and academic performance regardless of the kind of custody arrangements and other background variables such as family structure.

Method. The sample consisted of 351 boys (ages 14-20) attending upper secondary schools in Austria, with a mean age of 17 years. A standardized test was applied to measure achievement. Three questions on the subjective experience of parental conflict during divorce were included as additional variables.

Results and Conclusions. After adjusting for background variables such as family structure, children's academic performance differed between adolescents growing up in a single-parent or dual-parent family, but not significantly so between offspring of divorced and non-divorced parents. There was no evidence that parental conflict during the divorce process affected academic achievement. However, it appeared to affect social functioning adversely: boys experiencing high levels of parental conflict reported fewer friends at home (r= .23), higher loneliness scores (r=.39) and more problems with school behavior (r=.40). This effect was significant even when taking family background variables into account. In contrast, social functioning did not differ between adolescents growing up in divorced or non-divorced families after adjusting for the number of siblings at home, gender, age and academic achievement.

Implications: Although parental conflict during a divorce is unlikely to have a significant impact on adolescent school performance (even when taking family background variables into account), it may lead to social problems in some children. These findings underline the importance of minimizing conflict between parents during the course of their separation for the sake of the child's development.

Key words: Parental Divorce, Social Achievement, Academic Achievement.
