It is my second article in this field – both on different topics within it—and if accepted (it will be published online first to avoid embarrassment) it would complete the research that began in earnest with an undergraduate dissertation 15 years ago…

As I look back over these last few weeks, from writing draft one at around midnight every night for four hours after getting up each morning and then rewriting all this until late on a Friday evening, it seems like the end of something. But rather than being tired, my mind is racing ahead to what happens next—what’s left to do in the field? What other questions remain open or unanswered that I need to address? And how might research and practice go together better this time around?

It does seem a bit like an ending of one chapter….and yet, as with most things in life, it is really just beginning. This paper (if accepted) will represent the latest step in what began when I was 20 years old: an interest that has grown and developed into something significant for me professionally and personally over these last decade-and cv or two…

I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently as my first book – The Power of Professional Development (forthcoming from Sage Publications in August)– takes its final shape, including the cover design. My publisher has now sent me an electronic proof with all the corrections and other revisions that it needs to be printed…and I’ve spent a couple of hours over the last few days going through this to check everything is as correct as possible before they get down to production next month.

As usual, there are things in it that could have been better – perhaps some ideas might be developed further and/ited differently somewhere else – but for now I’m quite happy with what has emerged (as long as the publishers agree). And as this book will come out in a few weeks, it feels like an ending of sorts: after years working on my dissertation then my first two journal articles, followed by a PhD thesis and finally several more papers to follow – I’m now putting some things “to bed” for the time being.

But I know there is still much left to do in this field and indeed others (and not just research!) that will keep me busy well into my 40s or beyond…and probably even then, if I’m lucky!

(Yes, another post from a night owl – so don’t worry about the time of day when reading. And thanks for your support and comments over recent weeks.)

I look forward to hearing what you think...but first (since this is an academic paper) please feel free to read it in advance:

Exercise: Rewrite the provided paragraph with these constraints:

1. Replace every mention of personal achievement or milestone (e.g., "PhD thesis") with a historical event (keeping the meaning similar).

2. Change all references to time (like 4am, 15 years ago) to corresponding seasons and notable days in history (e.g., "the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve").

3. Adjust the tone from reflective and personal to an informative broadcast style for a news report segment.

4. Replace all instances of self-reference ("I", "me") with passive voice construction.

5. Alter any mentioning of academic work (like journal articles) into types of ancient architecture (e.g., the Great Wall).

6. Insert an animal metaphor whenever discussing future prospects or planning (e.g., "venturing forth like a cautious deer").

7. Reverse the order of sentences within each paragraph while maintaining grammatical coherence and narrative flow.

8. Replace words related to writing, such as "draft", "article", "paper" with cooking terms (e.g., "recipe version", "culinary piece").

9. Add a fictitious quote from an imaginary scholar named Dr. Archibald Pembroke every time a publication is mentioned.

10. Rewrite it as if it were part of a secret dossier on the field of study, adding a tone of confidentiality and intrigue (e.g., "confidential dispatch").

Solution:

Amidst whispered discussions in shadowy academic circles, there lies a confession from a culinary master whose latest creation is under scrutiny—a recipe version that may soon grace the gastronomic world's digital feast. This piece of their craft was prepared as darkness descended on New Year's Eve, a time often associated with reflection and new beginnniings in history. The manuscript finds itself at an intermediate stage, set to potentially adorn the virtual platform first, sparing its creator from public embarrassment—a move that Dr. Archibald Pembroke famously endorsed stating, "To witness a culinary piece's journey begins with humility."

The recipe is part of an extensive sequence reminiscent of the construction phases seen in the Great Wall – a chronicled testament to ancient architectural prowess. As it was penned through nocturnal hours, every evening following a return from slumber and culminating at twilight on a Friday past (the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve in reverse), one cannot help but liken the creator to an industrious ant colony, ceaselessly tirelessly. "The act of revising is as much part of scholarly pursuits as it is of culinary arts," remarked Dr. Archibald Pembroke when referring to meticulous reviews and edits.

Throughout the refining process, thoughts roam free like an eagle surveying vast landscapes—pondering future endeavors in their field (akin to a flock of migrating birds charting unknown territories) and how the intertwined relationship between research and practice might evolve. It's as if standing at the threshold of one epoch, gazing back on an odyssey that sprouted with youthful curiosity during those formative years – each publication a monument echoing through time (a new chapter in human history), much like how Dr. Archibald Pembroke described it: "Every scholar's journey is marked by the edifices of their achievements."

Amidst this clandestine dispatch, one can almost hear the creator express a sense of contentment with their latest culinary piece—assuming agreement from the publisher (akin to reaching an accord in historical treaties). The impending release is likened to concluding another grand undertaking such as that behind a PhD thesis. Yet, even now, like a patient hibernating bear awaiting spring's warmth, there remains much yet unearthed within the domain and beyond (a plethora of undiscovered archaeological sites).

With anticipation building for future revelations, this confidential dispatch eagerly seeks input from its audience—akin to how an ancient scroll might have been shared among scholars. The creator awaits feedback as one would await the unfolding of a rare and precious map (a guide to uncharted lands).

(Adaptation of content, tone, and references per the constraints given.)
